42 Miles, 14.6 mph Average Speed

Yesterday began at 5 am for me. I wolfed down a bowl of cereal right around 6:04, 6 minutes before it was time to leave. Then I proceeded to jump in the car along with Dad, Mike, Drew, Brent and Brandon. They were dropping me off at Chuck’s house, and then they were going fishing. I got to Chucks house and Tim was already there. The three of us sat around waiting for Ken to get there. Once he got there, we were off to Lake Geneva! I rode with Tim, and Chuck rode with Ken. Chuck normally drives, but his van was in the shop.

It takes about an hour to get up to Lake Geneva, and it’s definitely worth it! The ride we did started out with a big hill. I’m not used to Kathy’s road bike, so I went to shift up, and I couldn’t get the gear in place. I had to hop off and walk the rest of the hill so I could get it working again. I never shifted again the whole day. The next 20 miles were quite flat, and fairly uneventful. Tim and I were riding along at 23 mph for a couple of miles. 32 miles into the ride, John (the fifth guy of the 5 guys that rode) got a flat tire. It worked out nicely because that was right were Chuck wanted to stop.

During that 15 minute break I ate almost a whole bag of sharkies. Those things are awesome! I’m definitely going to be bringing tons of those when Josh, Mike and I ride down to Wheaton. We started riding again, and we started right into a slight uphill. Well, we turned the bend of that uphill and went straight into the wind! It was pretty insane! The road was on an up-grade for about 2 ½ miles, and it would not have been that bad, except for the brutal headwind! I was at the back of all other riders, and I knew I was not going to make it at the speed they were going. I checked behind me, and then I rode my way past all of them. Slowly but surely, I tackled that 2 ½ miles. About ¾ of the way through, John came up in front of me and started leading a 2-man draft. Oh man! The relief was instant! After a few minutes I took the lead again, and he drafted. It was brutal!

Finally we turned right were out of the wind. The remaining 5 miles was all hills! The first hill was a MASSIVE downhill! It was exhilarating! Then we started getting closer to the lake, and it was rolling hills the whole way. It was really fun, and if you worked the downhills just right, you barely had to work for the uphills. I really enjoyed flying down those hills! My legs felt pretty good. I got the shakes coming down the massive downhill, which felt weird, but other than that I felt pretty good. Tired, but good! I finished the ride and just collapsed onto the grass. It was a good feeling finishing a ride like that!

We went to this place in Genoa City that had these HUGE pieces of pizza. Like literally, they were the size of half a pizza! It took 2 hands to eat it! Chuck and I made a deal that if I mowed his lawn he would buy my lunch. Works for me! I hadn’t mowed a lawn for a really long time, and it felt good to do some real work! I really enjoy spending time with these guys, and I’m looking forward to fellowshipping with them again this next Saturday. We’re going up to Devil’s Lake to do some rock climbing. I’m really hoping Josh will be able to come. The next day we are going up to MI at like 4 in the morning. That will be fun!
